Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Moshi to Tarangire

Your adventure begins in Moshi, the charming gateway town nestled at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Your driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel at 7:00 AM in a comfortable 4x4 safari vehicle equipped with pop-up roof, charging ports, and binoculars for the journey. As you depart Moshi, watch as the massive snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro reveals itself through the morning clouds — the highest free-standing mountain in the world at 5,895 meters. The drive to Tarangire National Park takes approximately two hours, passing through the vibrant towns of Himo and Karatu before reaching the park gate. Tarangire is often called the hidden gem of Tanzania northern circuit, and for good reason. The park is famous for its enormous herds of elephants — the largest concentration in the world during the dry season — and its iconic landscape of giant baobab trees that can live for over 1,000 years. Enter the park through the main gate and immediately begin your first game drive along the Tarangire River. The river attracts huge numbers of animals during the dry season, creating incredible wildlife concentrations. Watch for elephants bathing in the river, their massive bodies glistening in the sun. Look up into the baobab trees where pygmy falcons nest in the hollow trunks, and lions sometimes rest on the branches. Arrive at Tarangire Treetops Lodge by early afternoon for lunch and check-in. This extraordinary lodge features treehouse-style rooms built among ancient mahogany trees, each offering panoramic views of the surrounding bush. After lunch and a brief rest, set out on your afternoon game drive. The late afternoon light is perfect for photography as animals become more active. Look for leopard resting in the sausage trees along the river, cheetahs hunting on the open grasslands, and huge herds of buffalo and wildebeest moving towards the water. Return to the lodge as the sun sets through the baobab trees, creating magical silhouettes against the colorful sky.

Day 2

Tarangire Full Day

Today is dedicated entirely to exploring the vast wilderness of Tarangire National Park, a landscape unlike any other in East Africa. Rise before dawn for a 6:00 AM departure, catching the first golden rays of sunlight as they illuminate the baobab-studded landscape. The morning hours offer the best wildlife viewing as predators complete their night hunts and herbivores gather at the river for their morning drink. Drive north towards the Silale Swamps, a vast wetland that serves as a crucial dry-season refuge for hundreds of elephants. Watch as family herds emerge from the mist, the matriarch leading her offspring through the swamp with practiced confidence. Calves splash in the shallow water while adults spray themselves with mud for cooling and insect protection. The sound of their trumpeting echoes across the swamp. Continue towards the boundary of the park where the landscape transitions to open grasslands shared with the Maasai Steppe. Here you may spot rare species including the fringe-eared oryx, Gerenuk antelope standing on their hind legs to reach high branches, and the massive kudu with their spiraling horns. Return to the lodge for a hot lunch and siesta during the midday heat. The afternoon game drive follows the Tarangire River downstream, where the concentration of wildlife is truly remarkable. Large herds of buffalo graze alongside zebra and wildebeest while vultures circle overhead. Look for the park prides of lions — Tarangire has some of the healthiest lion populations in Tanzania. As evening approaches, find a scenic spot along the river for sundowner drinks. The sounds of the African bush create a symphony — hyenas whooping, hippos grunting, and nightjars calling. Return to the lodge for dinner under the stars.

Day 3

Tarangire to Lake Eyasi

After breakfast, check out of the lodge and begin the drive to Lake Eyasi, one of the most remote and culturally rich destinations in northern Tanzania. The journey takes approximately three hours through spectacular landscapes that most tourists never see. The road passes through the Maasai Steppe — vast open grasslands stretching to the horizon, dotted with scattered acacia trees and herds of cattle tended by Maasai warriors in their distinctive red shukas. Stop at a roadside viewpoint where you can see the Great Rift Valley stretching northwards towards Kenya. The views are spectacular — Lake Eyasi visible in the distance, a shimmering silver sheet surrounded by volcanic mountains. Arrive at Lake Eyasi by late morning and meet your Cultural Guide, a member of the local Hadzabe community who will introduce you to one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa. The Hadzabe have lived around Lake Eyasi for over 10,000 years, maintaining their traditional way of life despite the modern world pressing in from all sides. Visit a Hadzabe camp where you will be welcomed with traditional songs and dances. Watch as the men demonstrate their incredible hunting skills using handmade bows and arrows crafted from the branches of the sausage tree. The women show you how they gather tubers, berries, and honey — foods that have sustained their people for millennia. Share a traditional meal of roasted meat and wild honey, experiencing flavors that connect you directly to the land. After the cultural visit, continue to your accommodation at Lake Eyasi Lodge, a beautiful property perched on the edge of the lake with stunning views across the water to the Ngorongoro Highlands. Settle into your room and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this remote corner of Tanzania. Dinner is served on the terrace overlooking the lake as the sun sets in spectacular fashion.

Day 4

Lake Eyasi Cultural Day and Lake Manyara

Rise before dawn for an unforgettable experience — joining Hadzabe hunters on a traditional morning hunt. Leave the lodge at 5:30 AM as the first light appears on the horizon. The Hadzabe hunters move silently through the bush, reading tracks and signs invisible to untrained eyes. Watch as they use their handmade bows to hunt birds and small game with incredible precision and patience. The hunt takes you through different ecosystems — open grasslands, thick bush, and along dry riverbeds where animals come to drink. Even if no game is taken, the experience of walking through the bush with people who have mastered survival skills over thousands of years is profoundly moving. Return to the camp for a traditional breakfast of roasted meat and wild berries. Say farewell to your Hadzabe hosts and begin the drive to Lake Manyara National Park, arriving by late morning. After check-in at the lodge, enjoy lunch with panoramic views of the Rift Valley escarpment. The afternoon game drive takes you through the park diverse habitats. Start in the dense groundwater forest where enormous fig and mahogany trees create a lush canopy overhead. This is home to the legendary tree-climbing lions — watch as they lounge in the branches above, completely unbothered by passing vehicles. Large troops of baboons and blue monkeys play in the trees, creating an entertaining spectacle. Continue through acacia woodland where giraffes browse on the canopy and elephants move through the forest. The afternoon light reveals the incredible birdlife — over 400 species have been recorded in this compact park. Look for silvery-cheeked hornbills, crowned eagles, and the stunning pink-backed pelicans. End the day at the lakeshore where vast flocks of flamingos create a pink ribbon along the soda lake. Return to the lodge for dinner.

Day 5

Lake Manyara to Arusha

Your final morning begins with a sunrise game drive along the lakeshore. The early morning light transforms the lake into a mirror reflecting the surrounding escarpment and the flamingos wading in the shallows. This is the best time for bird photography as the soft light reveals the incredible plumage of the park birdlife. Drive through the acacia woodland where giraffes and their young calves browse peacefully. Watch for the park famous pythons, some of the longest snakes in Africa, coiled in the branches of the acacia trees. Return to the lodge for a full breakfast and time to pack at a relaxed pace. Check out and begin the scenic drive back to Arusha, stopping at a viewpoint overlooking the Rift Valley for one final photograph. The drive back takes approximately two hours, passing through the vibrant towns and villages of the Rift Valley floor. Arrive in Arusha by midday. Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant or visit the Central Market for last-minute souvenirs. Browse stalls selling Maasai beadwork, hand-carved wooden sculptures, Tanzanian coffee, and colorful kangas. Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight, carrying with you memories of six extraordinary days exploring the hidden treasures of Tanzania northern circuit.
