A quick 2-day safari to Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater.
This 2-day safari visits Tarangire National Park with its famous elephant herds and the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater.
Depart Arusha at 7:30 AM in your comfortable 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof and experienced driver-guide. The drive to Tarangire National Park takes approximately two hours, passing through the vibrant towns of Himo and Karatu before reaching the park gate. Tarangire is famous for its enormous herds of elephants — the largest concentration in the world during the dry season — and its iconic landscape of giant baobab trees that can live for over 1,000 years. Enter the park through the main gate and immediately begin your first game drive along the Tarangire River. The river attracts huge numbers of animals during the dry season, creating incredible wildlife concentrations. Watch for elephants bathing in the river, their massive bodies glistening in the sun as they spray themselves with water and mud. Look up into the baobab trees where pygmy falcons nest in the hollow trunks, and lions sometimes rest on the branches enjoying the elevated view. Arrive at Tarangire Treetops Lodge by early afternoon for lunch and check-in. This extraordinary lodge features treehouse-style rooms built among ancient mahogany trees, each offering panoramic views of the surrounding bush. After lunch and a brief rest, set out on your afternoon game drive. The late afternoon golden light creates perfect conditions for photography as animals become more active. Look for leopards resting in the sausage trees along the river, cheetahs hunting on the open grasslands, and huge herds of buffalo and wildebeest moving towards the water. Return to the lodge as the sun sets through the baobab trees, creating magical silhouettes against the colorful African sky.
After breakfast, check out and begin the drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, approximately three hours through spectacular landscapes. The route passes through the Maasai Steppe — vast open grasslands stretching to the horizon, dotted with scattered acacia trees and herds of cattle tended by Maasai warriors in their distinctive red shukas. Stop at a viewpoint overlooking the Great Rift Valley where you can see Lake Manyara in the distance, shimmering in the morning light. Arrive at the Ngorongoro Crater rim by late morning. Stop at the famous viewpoint where the world largest intact volcanic caldera spreads out before you — a vast amphitheater 20 kilometers across and 600 meters deep, home to nearly 40,000 animals. The views from the rim are simply breathtaking and offer some of the best photography opportunities of the trip. Begin the descent along the steep switchbacking road that winds down the crater wall. As you reach the flat crater floor, wildlife appears almost immediately — herds of zebra and wildebeest grazing on the short grass plains, buffalo resting in the shade of acacia trees, and elephants moving gracefully across the open landscape. Drive towards Lake Magadi, the alkaline soda lake at the center of the crater, where thousands of flamingos wade in the shallow pink-tinged waters. Hippos wallow in the freshwater springs while crocodiles bask on the muddy banks. Your guide will locate the crater famous residents — the elusive black rhino and the famous crater lions. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the crater floor surrounded by wildlife. Late afternoon sees you ascending the crater wall for one final look before arriving at your lodge on the rim.
Rise before dawn for an early descent into the crater, arriving on the floor as the first rays of sunlight illuminate the eastern wall. The morning mist creates an ethereal atmosphere as wildlife emerges from their night-time shelters. The early hours offer the best chance to witness predator activity — lions completing their night hunts, hyenas returning to their dens, and leopards slinking back to the forest. Drive systematically through the crater floor, covering areas not explored the previous afternoon. Your guide will use their extensive knowledge to locate the elusive black rhino, which tends to be most active in the cool morning hours. Watch from a respectful distance as these magnificent creatures graze on the crater floor, their massive horns silhouetted against the rising sun. Visit the hippo pool where a large pod rests in the deep water. Watch as calves nurse underwater, coming up for air every few minutes. The birdlife is equally impressive — look for the stunning white-throated bee-eater, the elegant secretary bird, and massive martial eagles soaring on thermals above the crater rim. Enjoy a final game drive around the crater floor, soaking in the incredible concentration of wildlife. Around midday, begin the ascent back up the crater wall, stopping at the rim viewpoint for one last photograph. The drive back to Arusha takes approximately three hours through the highlands and rift valley. Arrive in Arusha by late afternoon. Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight, carrying with you unforgettable memories of three extraordinary days exploring Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater.
