An overnight adventure to Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater.
This 2-day safari takes you to Lake Manyara National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, offering a taste of Tanzania's wildlife.
Depart Arusha at 7:30 AM in your comfortable 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof and experienced driver-guide. The scenic drive to Lake Manyara National Park takes approximately two hours through the Great Rift Valley. As you descend the escarpment, the landscape opens dramatically — the soda lake shimmering in the distance against the backdrop of the rift walls and the dense groundwater forest stretching along the lakeshore. Enter the park and immediately begin your game drive through the dense groundwater forest, one of the most concentrated wildlife habitats in Tanzania. Enormous fig, mahogany, and sausage trees create a lush canopy overhead, filtering the morning sunlight into dappled patterns on the forest floor. This is the domain of the legendary tree-climbing lions — watch as they lounge languidly on large branches, completely unbothered by passing vehicles. Large troops of olive baboons and blue monkeys play in the trees alongside the lions, creating an entertaining spectacle. Continue through the acacia woodland where giraffes browse on the canopy and elephants move through the bush in family groups. Stop at a clearing where buffalo herds graze peacefully, their massive forms impressive up close. Arrive at the lakeshore where vast flocks of lesser flamingos create a stunning pink ribbon along the alkaline waters. Pelicans, storks, and herons line the shore while fish eagles patrol the skies above. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a scenic spot overlooking the lake, watching hippos surface and submerge in the deep pools near the shore. The afternoon continues with further exploration of the park different ecosystems. Return to the lodge by late afternoon, arriving in time to enjoy the sunset over the Rift Valley escarpment with drinks on the terrace.
After breakfast, check out and begin the drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, approximately 1.5 hours through spectacular rift valley scenery. The road ascends through the highlands, passing Maasai bomas where cattle herders guide their distinctive long-horned cattle alongside zebras and wildebeest — a unique sight demonstrating the harmonious coexistence of wildlife and pastoral communities in this region. Arrive at the Ngorongoro Crater rim by late morning. Stop at the famous viewpoint where the world largest intact volcanic caldera spreads out before you — a vast amphitheater 20 kilometers across and 600 meters deep, home to nearly 40,000 animals. The views from the rim are simply extraordinary and offer some of the best photography opportunities of the entire trip. Begin the descent along the steep switchbacking road that winds down the crater wall, offering ever-changing perspectives of the caldera below. As you reach the flat crater floor, wildlife appears almost immediately — herds of zebra and wildebeest grazing on the short grass plains, buffalo resting in the shade of acacia trees, and elephants moving gracefully across the open landscape. Drive towards Lake Magadi, the alkaline soda lake at the center of the crater, where thousands of flamingos wade in the shallow pink-tinged waters. Hippos wallow in the freshwater springs near the shore while crocodiles bask on the muddy banks. Your guide will locate the crater famous residents — the elusive black rhino, one of the last remaining populations in Africa, and the famous crater lions, some of the most photographed big cats in the world. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the crater floor surrounded by wildlife. Watch for hyena clans, jackals, and secretary birds as you explore the different areas of the crater. Late afternoon sees you ascending the crater wall for one final look before arriving at your lodge on the rim.
Rise before dawn for an early descent into the crater, arriving on the floor as the first rays of sunlight illuminate the eastern wall. The morning mist creates an ethereal atmosphere as wildlife emerges from their night-time shelters. The early hours offer the best chance to witness predator activity — lions completing their night hunts, hyenas returning to their dens after a night of scavenging, and leopards slinking back to the forest. Drive systematically through the crater floor, covering areas not explored the previous afternoon. Your guide will use their extensive knowledge of the crater to locate the most elusive species — the black rhino, which tends to be most active in the cool morning hours. Watch from a respectful distance as these magnificent creatures graze on the crater floor. Visit the hippo pool where a large pod rests in the deep water, their enormous bodies barely visible above the surface. Watch as calves nurse underwater, coming up for air every few minutes with practiced ease. The birdlife is equally impressive — look for the stunning white-throated bee-eater perched on bushes, the elegant secretary bird striding through the short grass, and massive martial eagles soaring on thermals above the crater rim. Enjoy a final game drive around the crater floor, soaking in the incredible concentration of wildlife that makes this place one of the greatest natural wonders on Earth. Around midday, begin the ascent back up the crater wall, stopping at the rim viewpoint for one last photograph of this extraordinary caldera. The drive back to Arusha takes approximately three hours through the beautiful highlands and rift valley floor. Arrive in Arusha by late afternoon. Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight, carrying with you unforgettable memories of two extraordinary days exploring the Ngorongoro Crater.
